The concept of free VOIP calls has fast gained popularity. Thanks to such calls, people can now stay connected with friends and family members residing in any part of the world. One can make calls anywhere, without having to bother about the expensive call charges applied to long distance calls.

With VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services, one can make calls either free, or at extremely cheap rates via their broadband connection. For instance, Skype, a famous VOIP provider enables its users to make free calls from one computer to another. It also offers other great features such as sending instant messages, making conference calls, video chat etc.

For being able to use these services, the only prerequisite is the creation of a Skype ID. Following the sign up, the user receives an individual number, which is linked to the user name. With this VOIP service, one can establish a connection with landline phones as well as with virtual or digital members. The Phone 2 Phone network is closed and secure, with the users being able to choose to lock or unlock various features. Also, if need be, the system divides the users on the basis of the bandwidth they ask for.

This extraordinary technology also has many other benefits for VOIP users. With this service, people can now own a Skype-enabled Wi-Fi VOIP phone. The phone resembles any conventional handset, and helps in making calls via the Wi-Fi hotspots rather than using the signals of telecom providers.

However, most of the Skype features are restricted to Skype subscribers only, and are valid for Skype to Skype calls. As far as the plans are concerned, Skype offers two main kinds of plans. First is the ‘Pay As You Go’ plan that adds credits to the user’s account when free VOIP services are used. The credits need to be used within the next six months. The second is the ‘monthly’ plan that costs $2.95 per month. It does not require signing up for any kind of contract, and includes facilities of caller ID, forwarding of calls, voicemail etc.

Each customer also gets a free trial period of 30 days, which can later be converted to unlimited usage by paying $9.95.

The service however has certain drawbacks as well. The plans offered by Skype are not good enough to take the position of the regular phone, which people use in their daily life. Besides, one cannot make emergency calls such as 911, along with being unable to link one’s current phone number with the Skype ID.

Coming to the verdict, the company is fast developing and improving its VOIP services, and is giving competition to its contenders in the market. It has now also started offering facilities of free international calls of up to 60 minutes to more than 30 countries for subscribers in the United States. Therefore, the company has managed to establish a strong relationship of trust and loyalty with its consumers, who keep on increasing each year.
