As voip is been legalized in India Just an year back (August 2008 to be accurate and it was recommended by TRAI) the coming news is shocking. The VoIP is going to be banned again in India. Many of my fellow blogs and news agencies confirmed this. India’s Intelligence Bureau is asking the government to block incoming and outgoing VOIP calls because of security reasons. They said that this things will be implemented until Department of Telecommunications (DoT) finds methods to trace and snoop on VoIP calls.

A recent attack on Mumbai can be a reason behind on this ask in which terrorist has used some of the services. One more reason can be the Caller Line Identification (CLI) parameters can’t be identified while you use Voip services from abroad.

Here we are not talking on security reasons and Questioning any of IB’s concern, what we are concerned here is if this thing happen in India, the Voip market will see an monopoly between Bharati, Reliance or BSNL etc. This is going to increase the call rates here in India from 1 cent or less to 8 cent or more, which anyways is not good sign for voip users who used to get and make voip calls from India.
